I wondered about that for quite a while, too, but then I got the following explanation: At the time the characters are singing the song, they have no way to know that Richard will die childless and leave his crown to his brother. By their [the characters'] lights, John WAS born too late to be John the First, since he was born after his brother and they think he'll never be king.

Actually, John Plantagenet, AKA Lackland WAS John I, so the song was wrong. Of course, no other John ever sat on the English throne.
