This is when u tube can mess you up with a guy who can't even hold the bow showing how to. Thank you for messing the viewers up so they can go to teachers like us to fix it. Like my teacher at Juilliard use to say, you always get what you pay for.
I agree with many comments here. I would not like my students to follow this advice. The thumb positioned like this cannot give maximum control and you can hear just from his open string playing that the burst of speed from the wrist flicks is losing him tone quality. There are great cellists that use a lot of wrist (e.g. du pre and even maisky to a lesser extent) but they use it at the moment of change rather than before.
