Fava shoes was a chain started in the late 1970's and grew to around 600 stores in 27 states at its peak in the mid 1980's, although most stores were primarily located in the Northeast.. They were owned by Morse Shoe Company until the early 90's. Morse also operated the shoe departments in many discount stores (including Walmart for a brief period). The Fava chain dragged down profits and put the company in bankruptcy. In 1993, Morse was bought by competitor J. Baker. While the new company had a plan for growth and profitability, the rapid of expansion of Payless shoes in the Northeast was the end of the line, and all stores were closed in 1995. (Some former Fava locations ended up becoming Payless).
