I think Martin made Stipe feel embarrassed by his remark about the best song, and thus Stipe deliberately sang without much emotion

no, I can understand that and I'll try to explain. Sometimes you love something so much that to say "this is amoung the one of the best songs..." would sound very cold and pragmatic. It just would not match your inner emotions regarding some particular piece. "of of the many" is not very flattering isn't it? It IS the best song. as is the other. They are each best in their own sort of way. It's amost the same with women.

funny how when he plays bittersweet symphony with Richard Ashcrot, he says thats the best song ever written, but when he plays nightswimming with Stipe, he says thats his favourite song - maybe Chris Martins just a huge sycophant.
