(Earth Focus: Episode 32) Nuclear Power: Risks and Consequences, an original Earth Focus investigative report, looks at the untold stories behind three of the world's largest nuclear disasters: Three Mile Island, Chernobyl and Fukushima. According to government and industry officials, no one died as a result of Three Mile Island and only low doses of radiation -- equivalent to a single chest XRay were released. But many local residents disagree and cite medical evidence that radiation released from the Three Mile Island reactor was severe enough to cause disease and death. It's been 30 years but the controversy continues. Chernobyl was the worse nuclear disaster in history. A new book, Chernobyl: Consequences of a Catastrophe says that almost a million people died as a result of the nuclear accident -- not 4,000 as The World Health Organization and the International Atomic Energy Agency claim. A screw up or a coverup? Earth Focus looks at evidence that links radioactive exposure to diminished intelligence, premature aging and a variety of other health conditions. Given the severity of the accident in Fukushima and the inability of the government to provide action to safeguard large portions of its population, the Japanese government moved the goal posts on what is considered safe radiation exposure for children and nuclear workers. Japanese organized crime, the Yakuza, is now becoming actively involved in the cleanup of radioactive waste.

  • Nuclear is the future because with perfect fission (which is sadly impossible) one Kg of uranium could power the entire United States...

  • This book sounds like it is profiting from the NYAS.The NYAS released a report after Fukishima with claims about Chernobyl & millions dying due to radiation. Should be stressed this report was initiated and edited by Greenpeace. Chernobyl is the most investigated industrial accident in history but the NYAS dismiss all other reports from the Red Cross,IAEA,UNSCEAR& World Health Organisation, claiming they are in a conspiracy with the nuclear industry but provide no supporting evidence.

  • No one said 4,000 died from Chernobyl, its 56. It was estimated that 4,000 children had thyroid cancer due to iodine infecting grass & cows eating the grass & children drinking the milk (something which should have been prevented by the use of iodine tablet which didn't occur at Chernobyl). Out of these 4,000 nine died which are included in the total of 56. The others where the clean up workers. Unlike the myth presented by media to spread fear to sell papers, radiation is a weak carcinegen.

  • If you live within 75 kilometers from a nuclear reactor, you’d get an estimated trace exposure of 0.009 millirem a year, which is smaller dose than eating one banana, which contains the radioactive isotope potassium-40. The waste produced by nuclear power is 2 pounds per person (fits into a coke can) compared to 68 ton of coal put into the atmosphere. Coal fired plants expose the population to around 200 times more radioactive by-roducts than nuclear power plants do in their entire lifecycle

  • This is rubbish. Three Mile Island, Chernobyl and soon to be Fukushima... It's always a conspiracy where everyone is in on it like the Red Cross, World Health Organisation, United Nations, the IAEA, the US government etc etc. Between 1974-1978 the New York Times had annual entries numbering 120 for car accidents which caused 50,000 deaths per year and 50 entries for Industrial accidents which caused 12,000 deaths per year. Radiation had 200 entries per year and caused zero deaths.

  • What about the thousands of people who die a year because of petroleum based power? OR the results to other animals of hydro/wind/etc. power?

EVERYTHING mankind does has a cost, and that cost is always hidden because it is not sexy, nor conducive to good/great/powerful remaining that way.

  • you do a very grate job what i dont understand is why you dont get that many views this rely grate report keep it up!
