My practice is about the act and process of making, in addition to how it performs as a trace of the creative process. I consider the processes within my drawing as a way of recording time, the situation of myself and as an approach to locate myself within time and a space. For this to take place my practise is necessarily time and labour intensive, as a result I become much closer to the work through its creation.
Because the work is about the primitive need and drive to make I try to separate and stop myself from over-thinking too much and focus on the physical aspect of making. I do this by finding and implementing rules for each piece. This can come from the material itself. For example following the grain in a piece of wood, or how long it takes to fill a surface, almost like an instruction manual from a model kit. These systems help me to separate myself from losing sight of my central values and allow me to connect with the creation of the work on a much higher physical level. It is not about the cognition, it is about owning the experience of making.
