  • In hospitals in the UK, tea, coffee, hot chocolate, bovril etc are still noted on the fluid intake and output charts. In my experience using these charts, there is no notable difference in the fluid output with patients where they choose caffeinated beverages over water. As well as this, we also get adequate water from our food in addition to beverages, never the less drinking more water can't really do you much harm providing that you don't over do it :)

  • I hate to tell you to suck eggs but I have read that using controlled human studies reasearchers have discovered that, under “everyday” circumstances, caffeine does not cause more fluids to be lost from the body than the caffeinated beverage itself provides. Caffeine may cause a bit more fluid to be excreted (as urine) in the short term (24 hour period) when compared to plain water, but this effect is mild and is not documented to affect hydration status.
