At that time you didn't expect explosions. You thought explosions were in the past, not in the present. What had happened for such an explosion and such a blast?

  • An aunt on my wife's side of the family lost her husband in this disaster. The worst part of it however was that she found out by reading the Western Mail newspaper on her journey home from work in Cardiff. The front page carried the banner headline and the names were listed alphabetically. Her husbands surname was Arnold and his was the first name. Not a way to find out that your husband had died that day.

  • I remember standing outside my house on Ystrad Rd and looking in the direction of Nantgyddon coal tip. There was a plane flying around a bigg cloud of smoke riseing up. later we heared on tv what had happened. Next day when we went to school one of our class did'nt turn up, we were told that his father had been killed.....he never came back to our school !
