  • I posted for my vet to see so he could diagnose the problem... he asked me to since my dog wasn't doing it at the vet's office, so lets rethink the name calling. You can see from the rest of the comments on here that no one is laughing or enjoying it. You didn't have to watch it if it was going to cause you so much discomfort and unrest.

  • @civicchic The new vet said this wasn't the case and referred us to a dog hospital near by, they did a scope on him and found he had an elongated soft palate that was causing this and is having surgery today to repair it.

  • My mom's Yorkie has been doing this for 2 1/2 years now, the vet we use treated it as the 'reverse sneezing' and just gave him steroids and antihistamines and told us when he does it to just rub on his sides to calm him down and do the light breathing into his face, in his nose to help him catch his breathe. He ended up with an enlarged heart and liver and almost diabetic from all the steroids they kept giving him for it so when these other problems started we took him to a different vet.

  • Don't worry this is totally normal in a dog it's called a reverse sneeze. My dog gets these all the time and all you have to do is just try to give them water or gently pat them on the back:) hope this helps:)

  • Hi, I have a miniature fox terrier who has a cough like this, he was a rescue dog and put it down to being out in the cold when he was so tiny, as took him to the vets and he has scar tissue on his lungs. It is hard to watch when he gets one of his coughing fits and as others said its usually over excitement that can trigger it, I've found that when he starts coughing it helps if I lift him and gently sway him back and forth as it gets more air into his lungs and he stops.

  • @ashlyndenbybaby You might want to have your vet specifically test him for heart problems - this kind of coughing is a common symptom of congestice heart disease.

  • @nicolecampbelll - this can be a symptom of a congestive heart problem. Our pharoah hound had the same sounding cough, especially when she got excited. After some simple tests, she was diagnosted with having a mytril valve disorder leading to congestive hear failure. You might want to have you vet check her out. They can give them meds to help.

  • My yorkie has been doing it for years! Mainly when she's excited

  • @ChildoftheKing2008 ??God?? You mean Dog i suppose. God doesn't exist.

  • @daisukinokaze I am thinking kennel cough. My dog woke me up at 3am this morning doing the same thing. I am waiting for the vet to call me back right now.

  • My chihuahua makes exactly the same noise when she's overexcited. My vet says that most toy breeds have too small of an airway for their body, so when they hyperventilate it makes a honking noise.

What we do when she starts doing this is we pick her up and calm her down.
