Or add very accessible mild mods and remove the 1st to 3rd gear limiter :)

Huh? Nope definitely not a Focus engine. The MZR DISI is Mazda's propriety engine. The MS3/3MPS has the same chassis as the Focus. Of course, in this case (generation 2 MPS), upgraded to lighter and more rigid steel.

i have the 03' Protege, LX trim and everytime i lend it to a family member, they have a hard time giving it back

This car is friggin awesome!! For anyone wondering, the thing holding back the 0-60 specs is the short gearing. You need at least 3 shifts to complete it, and that is totally unnecessary to have, since the engine has so much torque. First thing I'd do If I got one was to swap out the ratios from the 2.2L CDTi diesel 6speed (both Aisin transaxles), That would assure 60MPH comes in 2nd gear :D
