This was one of two top rated TV shows during the 1950's hosted by Arthur Godfrey. It was an early version of American Idol, in that it was a talent contest which brought many performers who would reach stardom. It ran on CBS from 1948 to 58. Visit: http://www.dougquick.com

Wow, yeah, he really was huge and has been almost completely forgotten. My only real memory of him was that he appeared in a commercial in 1982 shortly before he died.

Thank you for replying back to my comment. This guy really was a winner, he was not liked by to many people. He was sort the Ed Sullivan, of his time, this guy could make you, or break you. That's how powerful of a man he was. And he did not tolerate any of his people, getting involved with talent agents. He always said we are one big happy family. This supposedly was one of the reasons why he got rid of Julius La Rosa, because he got a agent at the time. It it be true.

That is exactly right. He was a typical "populist". A man that talked a lot about humility and "the common man", yet he himself believed he was above everyone else. They made a movie with Andy Griffith called "A face in the crowd" , which I believe was loosely based on his character.

Commercial was either for Chrysler cars, or else selling life insurance for seniors.

artiefun--see Wikipedia: CBS President Dr. Frank Stanton noted that Godfrey had
hired LaRosa on-air and suggested that Arthur fire him the same way. After
Godfrey did, he added: "I know you'll wish him godspeed as much as I do." The
hotel abandoned the anti-Semitic policy when Godfrey acquired a stake in the
hotel in the early 1950s. Dick Cavett, in a piece for the New York Times, called
the accusations of anti-Semitism "...purest nonsense."

Godfrey, was a tyrant who treated a lot of people with disrespect moreover Julius La Rosa, Back in the 1950s he had a hotel in Florida, not letting in the Jewish persuasion in. Being a tough Irishman he openly made it known that he didn't like Jewish people.
