I understand this is about fitness and fun but calling this bellydance, bellydance inspired, or bellydance flavor is way off base. The shimmies in this are more african styled. Bellydance does not use wide leg stances. It's great that people get inspired to learn more but this only creates more confusion and misunderstanding to a dance style that is already misunderstood around it. If you want bellydance "flavour" you have to use bellydance not unrelated movements to mid east-esque music.

Great video Donna - thanks for sharing it with us. Love your work!!!

Zumba offers a brilliant simplified interpretation of bellydance. It gives people a flavour of bellydance. Professional bellydancers may well find that they have people coming to them to learn more because of Zumba!

@dancinhanson81 it is because many of us are professionals and have studied long and hard with international instructors to represent our craft. We understand that Zumba is a fabulous workout, we respect that it brings exposure to the masses and we ourselves create fusion with our styles. The issue is calling something that is not even close to bellydance just that. It could cause confusion, injury, embarrassment with the enthusiastic participants who emulate those they trust.

@ukangell As someone who teaches restorative therapy through belly dance I am well aware that Zumba is fitness based. I work with cancer survivors, fibryo /MS sufferers, women with pelvic trauma, early dementia, ,osteoarthritis and muscular/skeletal damage. Belly dancing is not exclusively dancing. My concern is the improper posture being displayed as belly dance from a physio perception. If it walks like a duck, looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it is a duck, not a platypus.

Bellydancers.... please don't panic. Be happy! A lot of Zumba people, like me, have "discovered" bellydance through zumba.... I'd never really listened to the bellydance beats before, but wanted to do more after the short encounters in our zumba class. So - now I am looking for a suitable bellydance class to join. :)

I'm a bellydance teacher and a Zumba teacher. I've found that doing a bit of very simple 'belly' in Zumba has made my students more interested in bellydance and much more likely to try it for real. Bellydance is very misunderstood, Zumba is only ever going to offer a flavour of the dance style but it could lead to more people taking up bellydance - so chill.

well done donna a very informative collection of zumba fitness videos - basic bellydancing. i will be using some of these moves in my sahara oasis zumba fitness track for my participants.
Jeez - get OVER it!!! Zumba inspired me to find out more about bellydance as the music is fantastic. Why can't you just be happy that bellydance music, it's traditions and moves receives massive exposure from the zumba fitness programme. zumba is a FUSION of dance /fitness and a taster for many (including me) of previously unknown styles. I can then go on and educate myself regarding more "purist" forms of the style if i so wish. Bellydance was one of these, stop being so parochial!
