Now, the sequel. Soul Reaver 2 was also developed by Crystal dynamics and released by Eidos.
Soul Reaver 2 picked up from exactly where Soul Reaver left off, with Raziel in Nosgoths past with Moebius. The entire game is Raziels journey through various time periods of Nosgoth, pursuing Kain. Except that Raziel is guided by Moebius instead of the Elder God, whom Raziel deems untrustworthy. Encountering various important events in Nosgoths history, meeting Kain, who aims to change the future in Soul Reaver 1 by altering the past. Raziel learns of the last great vampire, Janos Audron, who exists in a private stronghold. Moebius tricks Raziel into a future where Janos has died and the world has been overrun by demons. Raziel eventually travels back to Janos time and meets the elder God, who he defies as a false God and escapes, through threats of eternal enslavement. Raziel finds Janos who tells him that he is the guardian of the blood reaver, a blade identical to the soul reaver, except it feeds on blood instead of souls. Before he can react, Sarafan vampire hunters storm the building, and Janos teleports Raziel away. He fights back to discover the Sarafan tearing out Janos heart. He tracks down the Sarafan who killed him and discovers that they are in fact his former self and his brethren. Raziel grabs the blood reaver and kills them one by one, condemning them to be reborn later as their vampire selves by Kain. Eventually, the blood reaver turns on him, and impales him. As Raziel and the blade merge, Kain removes the blade halfway through the process. Raziel then realises his fate- to be stuck in a time loop and become the soul devouring entity inside the soul reaver. He has merely postponed this destiny. He slips away into the spirit world before Kain can warn him of the repercussions of halting the act. Raziel, too weak to re-enter the material realm, can only wait for the Elder god to find him.
Although the story and fighting aspects of the game were improved (with new elemental reaver upgrades), the way through the game was fairly linear, with no side quests at all. The voice acting is still top notch, and the cliff hanger ending was incredibly tense. The next game would be defiance, which would do away with the puzzles altogether, but have the most evolved (and, most importantly, fun) combat system of them all. The story of defiance was also the best by far.
