A natural reading of the Qur'an introduced the idea of jihad into the world by explicitly and repeatedly endorsing violence.

Of course there are "schools of thought" that find other ways to explain this. It is the only way to avoid rejecting Islam altogether. There are people who do the same with the Christian Bible... explaining away all the bits that are uncomfortable. But it isn't really Christian. The same goes for Islam.

You have confused fundamentalism with extremism. Christian fundamentalism is peaceful because a literal reading of the Christian Scriptures is peaceful. Islamic fundamentalism is jihadist because a literal reading of the Muslim Scriptures is jihadist.

In Islam, one must employ an unnatural hermeneutic to the Qur'an in order to be peaceful. In Christianity, one must employ an unnatural hermeneutic to the Bible in order to be violent.
