I was inspired to do this render of an Art Museum from my trip to New York's Museum of Modern Art (MoMa). I used 3ds Max 2012 64bit, Mental Ray, and a Daylight System. All of the photos that ended up being used as textures were taken by me with my own camera. I put a little video together to show some of the stages that it takes to put something like this together. There is little done in terms of modeling for this project, it is mostly showing what a daylight system, photometric lights and mental ray can accomplish with little effort. FYI, these renders are crystal clear, but YouTube is adding some ugly compression to my video.
Nasty, yes I made a flat plane and applied a material with a diffuse bitmap of New York from a picture I took from the view in my hotel room. I used the Daylight system, which presented a problem when I was unable to use self-illumination for the background plane to keep it lit. So I used a sky portal pointed directly at the plane to direct daylight towards it. You will also notice I did the same thing on the Van Gogh painting on the left because it wasn't bright enough for me.
