http://www.oramd.com/gingivitis.htm Smoking causes gingivitis and other problems. Gingivitis is inflammation of the gum tissue resulting in redness and swelling, most commonly caused by dental plaque. Local irritants and some diseases, such as gingivitis and trench mouth, may also cause gingivitis. Smoking Causes Gingivitis: Gingivitis can lead to periodontitis or inflammation around the tooth root, which in turn can lead to tooth loss. Development of gingivitis is clearly dependent upon the presence and accumulation of bacterial plaque. Gingivitis is clinically detectable within days after plaque control efforts are discontinued.
