A fingerpick version of the song I wrote specially for those busking in aid of Amnesty International. Feel free to use it/ change it/ play it. I'll post more versions as I think of them.

The title is taken from Jonathan Power's excellent history of Amnesty: "Like Water On Stone -- The Story of Amnesty International". The reference is to water slowly slowly wearing away the rock through attrition -- like the millions of letters sent by ordinary Amnesty members every year on behalf of those locked up simply for peacefully expressing their beliefs.

Lyrics (chord chart available -- just get in touch):

Like Water On Stone

I met a brave man in Rangoon,
He was holding a flag and singing a tune
He sang Release Aung San Suu Kyi!
And give us our democracy.

[Chorus:]
Well heres to you, though youre unknown.
May you be like water on stone.

I met a woman from Afghanistan,
Fighting for the same rights as any man
To go alone into the street,
And make her own choice who she meets. [Chorus]

I met a British man today,
Talking bout his time in Guantanamo Bay
To the crowd I heard him say,
That was not the true American Way. [Chorus]

[Middle section]
The action of a single drop,
May have no impact on the rock,
But the steady stream flowing day after day,
Wears even the hardest stone away

I met a woman from Beijing,
Who went out to the square to sing
She sang of freedom and gave thanks,
To those who stood up to the tanks. [Chorus]

I met a million souls like me,
Who are more free to play and sing,
And with our music make the choice,
To give the voiceless back a voice.

Well heres to us, though were unknown.
May we be like water on stone.

  • This is one of the best original song I've heard in months.. i must say this song has a great potential..if u could fine tune this and release it commercially..

    this version is much better..

  • @mithunuae Thanks! I've tweaked the lyrics and the pace of the song since recording this rather scratchy version. And of course, Aung San Suu Kyi is now free (ish), so I may have to make a modification there, too. Hope to do some proper recording soon, along with MyMateGeorge -- will probably post as an update when that happens. I'm glad you like this version. I've come up with about three or four different ones, but I think this is my favourite one too. Cheers!

  • @mithunuae Newer version just posted! I'll be recording it properly soon.
