June 19-21, 2009 Istanbul, Turkey
Hot on the heels of the Formula One Turkish Grand Prix, Powerboat P1 launched a successful weekend of racing on the Bosporous River and history was made when the green flag dropped for the first Turkish Grand Prix of the Sea in Istanbul. With the race course spanning two continents - the Bosphorus separates the European and Asian portions of Turkey - commercial shipping traffic on the river shut down for the first time in 500 years.
The action started with practice on Thursday, and competition on Friday afternoon in the Official PowerPole. Taking first place was the 77 Lucas Oil Outerlimits by just tenths of a second over the 88 SNAV Outerlimits. The pair of Outerlimits boats were followed by the Smash Poker Cigarette which actually recorded a higher top speed according to the P1 telemetry. As could be visually seen, the Outerlimits hulls run so smoothly across the surface of the choppy waters that they are able to hold a higher consistent speed.
Saturdays Sprint race was started amid some confusion over the start procedure which was changed just before the first race. The fleet of race boats led by the pace boat had been switched to start on the Asian side of the Bosporous. The wide river connects the Black Sea to the Mediterranean Sea and splits the European Continent on the West bank and Asia on the East bank.
Charging to an early lead were the two Outerlimits boats with the 77 Lucas Oil sustaining a commanding lead which it held until the checkered flag. The new Furnibo Fountain taking second with the Smash Poker Cigarette rounding out the podium.
Sundays endurance race started in mostly flat seas with the Italian driver Luca Fendi of the Cigarette taking the jump on the start with the 77 Lucas Oil sitting on their transom and holding at bay constant challenges from the #33 Belgium Fountain entry and #66 Cranefields Wine German entry. The #53 Pignolo driven by Max Ferrari was running fifth comfortably ahead of the British Silverline.
Supporting the only American team and operating on a ten hour time difference from home base on the other side of the planet took its toll in the latter stages of the race when a ten dollar part failed. P1 indicated that the 77 Lucas Oil Outerlimits was just two hundred meters short of finishing the race for points.
this just POPPED UP ONTO MY COMPUTER. HOW. IM SO CONFUSED. WHAT IS THIS.
