Doosron ki jai se pahle, khud ko jai karain
To be able to achieve victory on ourselves prior to victory on others

Bhed bhav apne dil se saaf kar sakain
Able to eradicate discrimination from our hearts

Doston se bhool ho to maaf kar sakain
Able to pardon the mistakes of our friends

Jhooth se bache rahain, sach ka dam bharain
Able to stay away from lies and take pride in truth

Doosron ki jai se pahle, khud ko jai karain
Hum ko mun ki shakti dena..
Mushkilen parain to hum pe, itna karm kar
In tough times bestow divine grace upon us to be

Saath dain to dharm ka, chalain to dharm par
Able to follow the path of truth and righteousness

Khud pe hausla rahe, badi se na darain
To have confidence in our abilities and not to be afraid of evil

Dear Uncle, My Dear Departed Sweet Pa believed the SAME, imparted that philosophy to me, thankfully, & * lived by it*, as observed by those around him, not just me. :) He just was not as widely KNOWN as Gandhiji.:)

The more one listens to this bhajan, the more one thinks of Gandhiji. He said the ultimate "swaraj" was conquest of the narrow self within our own individual beings. Despite the bad reputation of the word jihad these days,the truest concept of jihad too has always meant an internal spiritual struggle for making oneself a more caring and compassionate person, not a destroyer of life.
