Composed by Mussorgsky and orchestrated by Ravel, Pictures at an Exhibition was originally created in commemoration of artist Viktor Hartmann whose art was used as the inspiration for the music. Not all the art survives, unfortunately.
I have wedded the last two movements, Hut on Hen's Legs and The Great Gate of Kiev, with photographs of my own choosing. Some of the photographs are famous, some obscure, some are poignant , some are amusing. I admit that the presentation lacks a controlling theme and pays minimal regard to chronology.
Included are photos by Alfred Stieglitz, Berenice Abbott, Eugene Atget, Jacob Riis, Alfred Eisenstaedt, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Diane Arbus and Walker Evans, among others.
Well, I hope you like it.
