You know you really have to respect Union Pacific's sense of adventure with it's heritage. After all, what's the fun in running a railroad if you can't do some cool stuff like this with it?

the high pitch sound from the steam loco is the steam turbine to power the light on the loco not the cars that's what the DDA40X is for to provide hep (head end power)

Steam has always been better at pulling than diesel/electric but not near as economical...steam locomotive will out all everything on the track today
-
@cchan006 Man,5067 was Smokin' with Full Throttle! That's an awful lot of smoke for a UP Engine!
-
Perfect combo at the beginning...world's largest steam engine and world's largest diseal working together.

God UP 3985 STOP SMOKING FIX THE PROBLEM
Im curious what the diesel-electric is for ? just in case? a pusher ? ( wouldnt think she needs a pusher) or are they using it for electric power for the cars?
thanks for posting !

@1MtnBoy: I heard from many sources the diesel-electric was used for dynamic braking, and I specifically heard the crew over the radio scanner that they were doing exactly that coming down the hill from Speer, WY. The Circus Train has their own power car, so they didn't need the GEVO for that.

what is the top speed of the steram loco??
TigerDude84 1 year ago
@TigerDude84: Depends, but the 3985 can achieve 70 mph without problems, and I suspect it can go a little faster. It's been said the surviving Northerns (4-8-4) like 4449, 844, 700, and 3751 can go much faster, in the 90 mph to 100 mph range.

@09JDCTrainMan: Yup, ran from Cheyenne to Denver yesterday, and should be running back to Cheyenne right now, for the Missouri River Eagle tour.
