Erwäge, wie sein blutgefärbter Rücken In allen Stücken Dem Himmel gleiche geht; Daran, nachdem die Wasserwogen Von unsrer Sündflut sich verzogen, Der allerschönste Regenbogen Als Gottes Gnadenzeichen steht!

A "viola da gamba" aka gamba aka viol derives from a 6-string Spanish Renaissance guitar called the viheula and, like the Renaissance guitar, has 6 strings, frets, and is tuned by 4ths and a major 3rd in the middle. The viol is held between the legs (treble and alto viols held on lap) and bowed underhanded. There are pardessus, treble, alto, tenor and bass viols. Some bass viols have 7 strings.
The only viol used in Bach's time was the bass viol.
