My tribute to the greatest Indian steam locomotive.
The WP class embodied true power. First manufactured by Baldwin in Canada this majestic iron horse was known as the Canada Engine.
The star on its nose -unforgettable. A truly indian embellishment. Immortalized by old Hindi and Malayalam movies and the Boost advertisement.
As many of us in Kerala are sure to have.. I grew up by the side of the railway track at Parambithara Road, near Ernakulam Junction. Three tracks about 100 feet away from the front gate.. One going to the shipyard hardly used.. the middle one to Wellington Island and the left most one a shunting track.. Shunting used to take a long time as the switching was mostly manual.
We used to have lots of fun playing by the side of the train and with friendly drivers, inside the engine as well. I can still feel the heat on my cheeks.
The WP used to haul the Cochin Madras Express and we used wait for it at about 5:45 PM when it would streak past us in a cloud of steam and smoke.
Already ready on the tracks would be a few coins and some stones.
The coins would the flattened and then would buried with ceremony hoping that it would grow into a money tree. The stones.. crushed into powder under those thundering wheels. In the very rare event of the WP coming in for shunting .. it was awe-inspiring to watch the wheel slip when the driver pushed up the throttle.
This song Vandee Vandee... was my daughter's favorite when she was about 3. Back in 2001. Since I could not find the actual song then.. I decided to make a version of it for her strictly from memory. She liked it and I hope you like it too. All pictures are off the internet and are the property of their respective owners. Humble apologies to the composer for the liberties I have taken with the arrangement.
WP Locomotive.
Made by Baldwin in Canada and then manufactured in India.
Now sadly defunct.
