Good stuff... However, "a student of non-violence"? I do wish people would stop using that dreadful term 'Ahimsa'. He shouldn't keep repeating the word 'violence' but should be 'a student of peace' because what you resist persists. Peace out.

@auggiedoggy I definitely read that the first two times you types it. Nor did I rewrite the history books lol. I hope you take it into consideration for future ref. Peace and love brother or sister.

@auggiedoggy : (Cont) we are in the poor state of health we are in here in the West. Over-eating and sedentary lives. If you want to avoid many of these health problems buy your groceries from outer isles of the supermarket, avoiding all the processed garbage that passes for food these days. Farmer's markets are another good place to shop. I try to buy local produce whenever I can.

@lilwave123 : What is killing us is over-eating! Also the refined, processed foods and sugars in our modern (Western) diet. Its not meat but the amount of meat that should concern us. I don't get bent out of shape at the thought of including modest amounts of animal foods in our diet. All the healthiest, longest-lived populations include some animal food! And these populations couldn't really give a damn about what the studies say. Nor should they. They aren't the ones getting sick! That's why

@lilwave123 : Of course! Meat-eating would have really taken off with Homo Erectus. Before that we weren't hunters. This is obvious from the fossil record. Scraping tools were about all we had. But protein can also come from easier to catch prey such as insects, fish, lizards, etc. Since you brought it up, the Massai don't die from CHD. There are other reasons to explain their short life expectancies. None are diet related though. Our bodies have adapted to cooked, mixed foods.

@auggiedoggy I'm obliged to mention Leonardo Davinci. Remember that that was in a time were there was no veg starter kits or anything. So lets say that there was a video like this one were people promoted the CRON diet; assuming people have found success it would be the same thing. But we have basically came to the same conclusion that that is why these people look so young - low protein/calorie diets.

@auggiedoggy What's funny is that, if I'm understanding you correctly - you're agreeing that the frequency, type, and processing of especially tough, hard to digest red meat is what's killing us. Heart disease is a relatively new development as well, and not until recently have we ate meat at the frequency we do. On free radicals; There is oxygen (along with other gases) in our bodies and digestive tracts. On taking this personally; you're making assumptions on the internet....

@auggiedoggy It was not possible for humans to consume a large amount of meat until fire was controlled and cooking was possible. The first tools didn't appear until two million years ago. And there wasn't good evidence of fire until after 800,000 years ago. That is still a relatively recent development, not enough for our bodies to have adapted to cooked meat. Here's some evidence: The Maasai in Kenya, who still eat a diet high in wild hunted meats, have the worst life expectancy in the world.

@lilwave123 : On free radicals: "One main problem with the free radical theory is the failure of antioxidants administered as dietary supplements, like vitamins E and C, to significantly increase maximum lifespan." (footnote below)
R.J. Mehlhorn, in Physiological Basis of Aging and Geriatrics, edited by Paola S. Timiras (CRC Press, Ann Arbor, 1994), pp. 61-72.
Its interesting to note that Roy Walford's CRON diet was not vegetarian nor did he recommend vegetarian diets.

@lilwave123 : Herbivores have a large caecum which helps, along with enzymes, breakdown the plant material and cellulose. Humans do not. In humans fermentation occurs in the colon but our large bowel is rather small and the benefit we gain from fermentation is trivial. Herbivores have massive fermentation vats as part of their digestive tract. Our fossil record show adaptation to cooked, calorically dense foods, i.e. smaller rib cages ergo smaller gut size, smaller jaws and teeth.
They all look great but particularly the woman who is 55. She looks 10 years younger.
