***this video is only a description of what i did, without any prior instructions or experience. it is not intended to be a guide on how you can do it, too. if you do try it yourself, make sure you are ready to accept the risk of damage or being unable to put the printer back together.***

**i no longer have this printer, i now have an HP officejet**

My printer stopped printing in black, even with new cartridges and the "cleaning" option. I heard this is a common problem among inexpensive printers, but I couldn't find service manuals to physically fix the problem.
I made a slideshow of how I opened up my MFC-420cn and cleaned the printer head.

  • Try a maintenance clean before you disassemble:

Press menu > Mono Start > 4x Arrow up after another. All lights will flash.

    1. Power clean - Press 7>6>4 >Mono Start.

    2. Power Purge: 7>6 >3 >Mono Start.

Press 9>9 to exit maintenance mode. Run a print quality test print.

  • Hey, you can remove the print head without removing the entire metal 'track'. Just slide the print head to the left (all the way), and then wiggle it up and out.

  • @Pewit35 mean bro fanx!!!

  • @1stb1 shut the fu... wait what? o you made that joke funny im impressed

  • I thought he was defusing a bomb until I read the title...

  • Hey all. The maintenance mode commands work in a MFC 495CW as well. The firmware hasn't changed in that regard between these models. I'm running the power clean and power purge now. My blue inkflow is blocked: only one cyan square prints in the print test. Regular clean didn't do it. If this doesn't, I will do the "alcohol enema". :P

  • @alfatune You're welcome :)
