Friends Mourn 14-Year-Old Smithville Girl

Friends and relatives are mourning a 14-year-old girl who died suddenly on Monday.

Kelsey Thomas was a student at Smithville High School. Friends described her as a beautiful girl with a sweet spirit.

The Rev. Eric Means said he's counseling about 70 teenagers who are coping with Kelsey's death.

"They're too young to have lost a friend," Means told KMBC's Martin Augustine. "One of the young men down there was talking about the fact that, you know, three months ago he was sitting in one of the chairs down there next to Kelsey. Never dreamed that three months later, she would be gone."

An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death. Clay County authorities said they do not suspect foul play.
