Please enjoy a Japanese original song, "舟唄 (Funa-Uta)", meaning "Boat Song", originally sung by 八代亜紀 (Yashiro Aki). I combined two songs sung separately by Teresa Teng and Yashiro Aki. This song is basically a man's song.
(Hama Keisuke) composed the song, and 阿久悠 (Aku Yuu) wrote the lyrics.

The following are the Japanese lyrics, with my English translation.

Osake wa nurume no kan ga ii

Sakana wa abutta ika de ii
(with grilled squid, and)

Onna wa mukuchi na hito ga ii
(with presence of a quiet woman aside)

Akari wa bonyari tomorya ii
(Dimly-lit lamp in the room is all right)

Shimijimi nomeba shimijimito
(While I quietly take Sake,)

Omoide dake ga yukisugiru
(only my memories come flooding back)

Namida ga porori to koboretara
(When teardrops fall,)

Utaidasu nosa funauta wo
(I will start singing the Boat Song)

Oki no kamome ni fukazake sasete yo
(Let seagulls in the sea drunken, and)

Itoshi anoko to yo
(I will have a lie-in with that girl,)

Asane suru danchone
(Danchone)
(Danchone has no special meaning, and is uniquely used in folk ballad.)

Mise niwa kazari ga nai ga ii
(I prefer no decoration in the bar)

Mado kara minato ga mierya ii
(If the port is open at the window, it is sufficient)

Hayari no utanado nakute ii
(A hit song is not necessary here)

Tokidoki muteki ga nareba ii
(When a steam whistle occasionally reaches my ears, it is all right)

Horohoro nomeba horohoro to
(While I quietly keep drinking,)

Kokoro ga susuri naite iru
(my heart is weeping)

Anokoro ano ko wo omottara
(When I think about her in those days,)

Utaidasu nosa funauta wo
(I will start singing the Boat Song)

Potsu potsu nomeba potsu potsu to
(While I slowly keep drinking,)

Miren ga mune ni maimodoru
(my lingering affection comes back to my heart)

Yofukete samishiku nattara
(When I feel sad toward the midnight,)

Utaidasu nosa funauta wo
(I will start singing the Boat Song)

  • Dear Masami.

Wonderful combination video of Teresa and Yashiro. This piece is slightly different ENKA tune. It's unique melody and the lyrics.(Funa-Uta)Is it common to sing man's song sung by female singer in Japan and vice versa?Beautiful enka anyway.

Every singers have their own way and personality to express the emotions of same songs.I can understand the differences between Teresa's and Yashiro's versions. This video is telling us there are many versions of same song.

    Great task! Thank you.

  • Both women are wonderfully talented singers whether singing in Mandarin or Japanese ... but I prefer Yashiro Aki's version of "Funa-Uta."

    Dear Teisuka,

Please enjoy your midsummer party, with "lukewarm Osake". I like hot Osake, just like waki27221-san's comment below. Now, a pint of cold draft beer is the best, as it is already very hot and humid in Japan.

  • Dear Masami-san,

This is lovely song, and your video is simply elegant, as usual. I like both renditions very much, Teresa Teng and Yashiro Aki. But guess what? Most familiar version for me is Meiko Kaji's cover of this song. I heard it first many years ago. By the way, maybe I will drink a little "lukewarm Osake" on this evening, because it is Midsummer party in Finland... ^_^ Arigato gozaimasu for this video, Masami-san. Ganbatte kudasai!

    Teisuka
