Over a thousand years ago, Europe experienced one of its greatest periods of cultural enlightenment.
For more than three centuries in Medieval Spain, Muslims, Jews and Christians lived together and prospered in a thriving multicultural civilization. Here, remarkable individuals of different faiths made lasting contributions in such areas as poetry, art, architecture, music, dining etiquette, science, agriculture, medicine, engineering, navigation, textiles, and even hydraulic technology.
Their rich, complex culture reached a high point in the Mediterranean Middle Ages. However, larger forces in conquest of land and power brought about puritanical judgments, absolutism and religious extremism. The conflict they triggered extinguished the shared learning that once flourished in this enlightened land
correction.... abdulrahman the third could not have claimed himself khalifa , because the khalifa has to have controll over two cities meca, and madina , and that is far far away from his rule therefore this statement can not be true

@EPGAH I guess aNon Muslim should not be asked any tax (jizya); only Muslim should be asked to pay Zakat to Muslim ruling elite

@sameera9900 Yes, but they weren't keeping the minorities around out of the goodness of their cult, let alone the goodness of their heart, they charged non-Moslems an "Existence Tax"--Jizya.
Could you imagine the sheer number of lawsuits that would ensue if any Civilized World country charged non-citizens a tax JUST TO EXIST?!
NAACP, ACLU, La Raza, MALDEF would suddenly have to become For-Profit organizations!

@StopSpamming1 The ruling elite were Muslim. There was a lot of studies on Islam in Andalus. There was a lot scientific studies encourage by Abbasid Dynasty based in Baghdad

@EPGAH Yes that is why minorities existed even in places where Muslim were in majority

@Nasir986 They didn't feel threatened by "minority" religions...Once the others stopped being minorities, they were threatened and reacted violent!

What I found is that they were primarily Arabs and not necessarily Muslims. This happened later when Emperor Friedrich II died in 1250 and the Arabs were driven out of Europe and resorted to Islamic studies. Hardly any secular or scientific developments by Muslims have come forth since.
