This is a very gorgeous song, sung by the best, the great Mario Lanza. His beautiful voice and photos of him are combined with appropriate paintings by master artists to accompany the song lyrics.

The beginning photo of Mario Lanza was taken from "The Great Caruso" the rest of the photos of him were taken from his film "That Midnight Kiss". Both are available for purchase from Turner Classic Movies.

Rudolf Friml excelled with operetta style American musical theater. The story of The Vagabond King, "... originated in a hit 1901 drama, If I Were King, by Justin Huntly McCarthy...The 1925 Broadway operetta had a book by W.H. Post and Brian Hooker. Hooker was also the lyricist. He was a scholar of French literature known for an outstanding English translation of Rostand's Cyrano de Bergerac." The song, "Someday", was written by Rudolf Friml and Brian Hooker for this 1925 Broadway musical.
The story concerns the famous fifteenth-century French poet François Villon who lived, circa 1431 --1463. He was a poet, a thief, and a vagabond. The operetta, The Vagabond King, is about Villon's dislike for King Louis XI and Villon's involvement with the king's mistress, Katherine de Vaucelles. The plot reveals that the King is upset with Katherine's refusal to his proposals due to an unknown poet's advances. The king disguises himself and follows her to a meeting she has at the poet's favorite inn. Villon is there loudly criticizing the king for his incompetence. Villon boasts that he could do a better job. Upon hearing the boast, the king suddenly reveals himself. He offers Villon twenty-four hours to not only bring about the changes which he espouses for Paris, but also to win over Katherine for himself or he must muzzle forever his contempt for the king and abandon his pursuit of Katherine. The catch is that if he takes up the challenge, he must succeed with both goals or be hanged. Also a bit of a problem for Villon, is that he has already committed himself to his girlfriend Huguette.

The Broadway show was very popular with audiences and ran for 511 performances. "Paramount remade the musical in 1956, directed by Michael Curtiz and starring Kathryn Grayson as Katherine, Oreste Kirkop as Villon, and Walter Hampden as the King. The cast also had many talented newcomers, including Rita Moreno (as Huguette) and Harry McNaughton, Jack Lord, Phyllis Newman, and Leslie Nielsen in smaller roles." I'm glad that you enjoyed the video.

I see that you are also an Elvis fan and imitator. I have long been a fan of his too. I especially love his gospel songs, but he sang everything so well and from his heart. Did you know that Elvis was a big fan of Mario Lanza?

    Thank you again.

Thank you for your high praise. Mario’s incredible voice and delivery make this a great listening experience. Such a beautiful song, such a tenor to sing it. Being 67 years, I have heard many tenors, both live and through recordings, but Mario stands out above all the others for me. I am very happy that you like my choice of paintings. There are so many great artists from around the world; it is my pleasure to present their work for my viewer friends’ enjoyment. Thank you again.
