WKYS has been one of the DC areas premeired radio stations for several decades. At one time it really was a progressive station. They weren't afraid to mix genres as long as you could dance to it. Here's a clip from early 1980 as the Police's "Voices In My Head" leads into Yarborough and People's "Don't Stop the Music" with DJ bante afterward. If a DJ played the Police on WKYS TODAY, he'd be SHOT.

  • Odog, you could play The Police on WKYS TODAY,

but it would have to be sampled by PUFFY first.

  • Yeah...I guess you've got a point THERE. :-)

  • Hey, I know it's not in the disco era, but... I just transferred a WKYS aircheck to CD from cassette. It's from January 4, 1991, commercials and all, with some very good music. It's the Friday Afternoon Traffic Jam with Sammy Mac, featuring Super DJ Gregg Diggs, and towards the end, at the six-o'clock hour, Alvin Jones steps in with slow jams till midnight. It's about 43 minutes long. Does anyone here know how I can post it?

  • Good Stuff from WKYS back in the day, this was back when NBC owned it. Still hard to believe they owned a station that was R&B back then

  • Whenever I passed thru DC to go to NY I'd alwayys drive around or stay the night and turn on to KYS!!!

  • Wow that is great! What is the webiste so I can download that program? I would like that becuase I have alot of tapes that I recorded from wpgc and kys that I would like to upload into youtube. Help me out buddy ;)

  • All of this was from cassettes as well. I downloaded a FREE program called AUDACITY. I plugged my tape deck into the computer with Mic or Line In input and recorded the audio into AUDACITY. Saved it as wav. files and I was good to go. The trick is balancing the audio levels because it's really easy to distort the audio.

  • I have some music that I recorded from WKYS but it's recorded on a tape. Do you have any ideas how I can make it to an mp3, etc so I can upload it on here lol?

  • I really need to. I've been thinking about it lately... but it will have to be chopped up into sections, won't it? I need to learn how to actually do this.

  • Please post it. I love hearing old airchecks from DC radio.

  • Great stuff. The jocks all sounded similar. I hate to say it, I listened to OK100 during this time..

  • Convert it to cd or your windows media player. Save it than upload it to Youtube. Use the help button here on y. Maybe it explains it better than I could.

  • lol@ if you play the Police on WKYS now, he'd be shot. So true. The station is terrible now. Absolutely terrible.
