London continually replicates itself. Its limbs are regularly destroyed but more glorious ones grow in their place. The roots of the demolished buildings germinate in the earth, infusing the new with their energy. Their buried life is restored. So there is a kind of continuity of spirit on the same site over hundreds of years.
The Lloyd's building is a good example of this processs. The modern building is built on the site of the old one, and that near the site of an older one still. Inspired by private wealth and personal ambition, the present Lloyd's building transformed urban architecture and introduced the vista of high technology into the city. But not everything of the old was lost. Physical relics of the old Lloyd's building can still be seen within the new.
