Hornady XTP .45 ACP +P 230 gr JHP AMMO TEST

Simple penetration and expansion test of the Hornady XTP, .45 ACP +P 230 gr JHP using a diluted form of SIM-TEST Ballistic Testing Media. This format is comparable to ballistic gel, and includes four layers of denim. Video includes brief overview of the cartridge, recoil shots, and one shot test. Post-shot evaluation shows bullet path through the block, average diameter, and retained weight. Test gun was a Colt 1911 Series 80, 5" barrel. Advertised muzzle velocity is 950 fps, my 5-shot average was 896 fps.

VERY IMPORTANT INFO REGARDING AMMO TESTS ON THIS CHANNEL:

Early on, I used wetpack for ammo testing, with or without denim. Beginning in 2011 I use SIM-TEST calibrated to ballistic gel specs plus 4 layers of denim. The denim is an IWBA standard simulating the density of heavy clothing. Please understand that these techniques are merely representations to indicate possible ballistics; they are not intended to replicate real-world street results. Even by adding bone, additional clothing, etc., there are just too many factors involved in a self-defense scenario to offer a 100% degree of accuracy when compared to street results. It is essential to perform exhaustive research on your carry choice, which could yield actual use data. So why 4 layers of denim? I've never seen anyone walking around with 4 pairs of pants on.... Please explain

Has nothing to do with pants. IWBA, International Wound Ballistics Association standard, and my thread count is also close to their preferred specs. Simulates heavy clothing, somewhat of a worse-case scenario.

heavy clothing decreases expansion of the bullet but in turn helps penetration. In my hot environment +p bullets expand to quickly in most loadings and don't penetrate far enough for my liking. Speer's gold dot seems to be immune to that happening. I also like federal's hst non +p here in your chosen caliber. I lived in the pacific northwest and carried either +p hst loads in the winter or gold dots.

@tdub9899 If a bad guy had a Carhart coat on and a jean shirt with a t-shirt on underneath, that is alot of material to go through. Hence the 4 layers of denim in testing.

I would love to see what 230 grain FMJ ball ammo does in a sim test. I carry handloaded 230 grain xtp's in my rock island 1911 they are coming in at around 850 FPS out of a 3.5 inch barrel and around 900 FPS out of my glock 21 SF. thanks for the info I can have somewhat of an idea of what I can expect.
