Joseph Haydn's 'Seven Last Words from the Cross' - Introduction: Maestoso ed Adagio - as performed by the Navarra Quartet.

Haydn's remarkable string quartet cycle was composed for the Lenten liturgy at Spain's Cádiz Cathedral in 1787: each slow movement was to follow a sermon on one of the dying Christ's last sayings in the gospels.

This performance was a part of the 2009 City of London Festival and took place in the Church of St. Stephen, Walbrook, on the 26th of June 2009.

The Navarra Quartet consist of: Xander van Vliet (Violin), Marije Ploemacher (Violin), Simone van der Giessen (Viola), Nathaniel Boyd (Cello).

  • Gorgeous...didn't like it at all until I listened to it a couple of times. They certainly are saying something with this rendition...something special!

  • Stunning version ...... so sensitive. Thank you so much for beautiful rendering of this heart-breaking piece of music.

  • I love this rendition. Very lively. Other versions sound flat by comparison.

  • Now for my facetious comment. The Navarra Quartet, in this line-up, features Boris Johnson on 1st violin and Ed Milliband on cello. (Not really!)

  • @hanrichc You're right, they're "gie'in' it Laldi", as we say in Scotland. One isn't used to hearing early classical chamber music - Haydn particularly - played with such passion (no pun intended, given the subject matter).

This quartet's intensity is why I like to hear them play; I have particularly come to love their approach to Shostakovich.

  • Are they method actors too?
