Steven, Age 18, Prematurity/Portal Hypertension, Childrens Health Foundation

At six feet tall, its hard to picture 18-year-old Steven as a tiny baby who fit into the palm of a hand. Its even harder to imagine the tears, anguish, uncertainty and fear he and his family have experienced or understand the life-changing decisions theyve had to make to save Stevens life.
Steven and his twin brother Michael were born nearly four months early. They were tiny yet beautiful, but the twins were fighting invisible illnesses threatening their lives. They relied on feeding tubes, breathing machines and IVs and underwent numerous tests and treatments just to stay alive.
For Michael, the challenges were too great; he passed away after four weeks. Steven continued to fight, and three months later, her left the hospital and went home for the first time.
Since then, Steven has returned to the Childrens Hospital at London Health Sciences Centre repeatedly. Because of complications caused by earlier treatments and lingering effects of prematurely, hes had over 30 operations, more than 100 ER visits, numerous admissions, and regular care. But Steven also comes back as an advocate on the Child and Youth Advisory Council, enhancing patient care. Hes a reminder that even the tiniest children can grow despite adversity, transforming despair into hope for a better future.
