@finylvinyl66 Actually.. the wagner connection is very interesting :D I just did a piece at uni on Falstaff and the only connection to Wagner is that Verdi WASN'T affected by the influence from the North. The whole of Europe was expecting change.. and here comes old Verdi (haha) with this amazing work that doesn't include any of the above mentioned wagnerisms :P
Hope this helps :D Ciao

It may very well be Verdi's masterpiece
(although "Otello" is right up there,)
but I don't get the Wagner connection.

Non melody?!?!!? There are melodies all over the place, oyu must be deaf not to hear them, this is one of the most melodious pieces Verdi ever wrote.
And what I mean by out Wagnered is how he infuses the drama and the music.
He composed this for no one's taste, but his own, okay?

if by out-wagnered you mean 'finally gave in to writing non melody so that pseudo-intellectuals would call it his masterpiece' then yes, he definitely did.

yes one could say that Verdi out wagnered Wagner in this opera, it is truly his masterpiece.

I like how the action and dialog changes the music , I should love to meet with this in New Millenium opera compositions for 2010
