Music & Lyrics: Jessica Wilson

Song Production: Rob Friedman
Video Production: Michael Leleux

about THE MEMOIRS OF A BEAUTIFUL BOY:

In a memoir studded with delicious lines and unforgettable set pieces, Robert Leleux describes his east Texas boyhood and coming of age, under the tutelage of his eccentric, bewigged, flamboyant, and knowing mother. Living on their in-laws' horse ranch in a white-pillared house they can't afford, Robert and Mother find themselves chronically low on cash. Soon they are forced into more modest quarters, and as a teenaged Robert watches with hilarity and horror, Mother begins a desperate regimen of makeovers, extreme plastic surgeries, and finally hairpiece epoxies—all calculated to secure a new, wealthy husband.

To her son's amazement, she succeeds. Robert, meanwhile, finds direction in a Houston theatre company, overseen by a former Broadway actress who has energetically embraced her role as a big fish in a small pond. RehearsingWest Side Story, he meets a choreographer named Michael, who will become his life partner and whose Cajun-rooted family welcomes Robert into the kind of normal home he's never known. With wit and warmth that lighten even the most awful circumstances, The Memoirs of a Beautiful Boy is a sparkling debut.

THE BUZZ:

"The text is lush with simile, verdant with metaphor and generally permeated with writerly flair. Though the author calls it a memoir, it reads more like a comic novel with considerable theatrical panache."

--The Kirkus Review

"The Memoirs of a Beautiful Boy is, in a word, just that: beautiful. It is also hilarious and heartwarming. Robert Leleux, whose talent is as big as his home state of Texas, is more than a survivor. He is, with this glory of a book, triumphant."

--Kevin Sessums, author of Mississippi Sissy

"Reader, stand back! Here's Robert Leleux, the funniest young writer to appear in who knows when, with a maelstrom of a mother straight out of hell and Neiman Marcus, talking his way into the affections of readers everywhere with a wicked tongue tempered -- barely -- by a big generous heart."

-- Mark Doty, author of Dog Years, Firebird, and Heaven's Coast

"Robert Leleux, growing up with weekly nail appointments at Neiman's and bravely wearing paisley pants in East Texas, has taken a childhood that was alternately chaotic, horrendous and hilarious and turned it into a brilliant memoir. Thank God for all of us that his honey-ham glazing days are behind him and Leleux can take his rightful place alongside Augusten Burroughs, David Sedaris and, yes, even his mama Jessica's beloved Truman Capote."

--Celia Rivenbark, author of Don't Dress Your Six Year Old Like a Skank, We're Just Like You, Only Prettier, and Bless Your Heart, Tramp

  • Yes--this was definitely written by his Mom! She actually has written a number of similar songs which she's personally recording at the moment and I'll create videos for later. Thanks for the comments gang!

  • Well, I think it's hysterical. And clearly not meant to be serious. Hence the whimsical imagery. NOT SERIOUS stuff here!

  • Me too. And, moreover, I can't wait to see the movie. Because I'm sure there will be one.
