barrel racing with a thoroughbred

this is my new horse he is an 8 yr old ex-race horse. aka= a thurobred. he is 16.2 hh. this was in april of 09. we have gotten much better. and now i have finally found the write bit lol. i will put the video of us racing this coming weekend sometime in the week. so be on the look out for it. he is much faster now and gaiend weight and more muscle. he is the best horse ever and i no that he is gonna take me places he has the heart, determination, and love for the sport as do i. comment and rate nicley thank you and remember its not always the breed of horse its the heart to be a champion. my horse is my baby and will be even after he is no longer with me. but that wont be for a long time so lol enjoy.

I barrel gamed with a Thoroughbred aswell! I'm telling he can do real well, you just need to teach him how to use his hind end more so then if you had a QH & teach him a signal to bolt. That helped alot with me. We placed a handful of times in barrels, but he excelled in Pole Bending, especially being off the track, he should know automatic leads, try it out! P.S. Circle him a few times in the ring before passing the clock to get his momentum going, Tb dont excelerate as fast as a QH

Don't mean to be mean or hurtful, really, but don't you think a thoughbred would be a faster runner? I mean he may be just not on barrels

i have a thoughbred and i use him in the hunter ring if you give him like a integrity instead of grain it benifits them more and also if he starts shaking his head and playing that is a good sign beacuse that means hes happy but he might have grown out of that already also if you put a bit of cooking oil in there feed that helps keep their coat health wich makes them alot happyer also it helps to do lots of tranistions when ridding to get them to wrok with their hind end just saying

@maddie09513 you would think bc its a thoughbred he would be faster BUT throughbreds arent bred for this type of racing they're bred for distance how long they can run and building up speed. Just like quater horses arent bred for racing on tracks they're bred to run fast in a short amount of time and distance as well as have good balance. But this horse doesnt look half bad :)

woot, go boy go. tb can so barel race, i know two who love it. my tb may not turn that well, but he covers that ground, does the key hole with the best, and wins everytime when it comes to straight up speed even though he is trained for jumping and eventing.

I really don't get what the big deal is a horse is a horse they are good at what ever you take the time to train them for. And as far as TB's not being good for barrels that is crazy any horse can barrel race. I have been barrel racing for years and have used both a quarter horse and a TB they both do well. Just cause TB's have long legs means nothing other than a bigger pocket but they can also cover more ground between barrels with little effort. I those who feel TB's arent good are wrong!!!!!
