Here is a short of me finding and field cleaning a 6 pound Bormann cannon ball under water. I don't recommend banging on an artillery shell with a rock, but it seemed like the thing to do to me at the time. The black powder in the shell has long since decomposed, the bubbles that are leaking from it are a byproduct of that decomposition. It's since been rendered inert and preserved. Whew!
