Thanks so much for uploading this, as I only have a poor copy of it ... anyone who may not watch this through to the end will miss out on an ending thats likely to stay with them for sometime...
they really got the senes so right in this... each scene is like a painting from the period..that older man with the white head band..could almost be rembrandt himself..i had to still it to appreciate it even more lol...its obvious they went to a great deal of trouble to get this so true to period...wonderful!
Probably, along with the MR James Christmas ghost stories, THE MOST disturbing thing the BBC made in the 1970's. I was 16 when I first saw this, and it chilled me to the bone. It does not shy away from the original tale's necrophiliac tone; in fact, it embraces it. This imbues the whole with a tangible darkness that is almost repellant - but you have to keep watching, even though you don't really want to. Is it good though? Hell, yeah!
I really enjoyed this one, it went on perhaps for a little too long but incredibly atmospheric in the first part of the programme.

"Turn from the light."
What a beginning sentence - so apt! I was in my teens also when I saw this, and it's haunted me ever since. Wish I could find it on DVD.
