Our Kilimanjaro trip was superbly organised by staff at the Marangu Hotel -- www.maranguhotel.com. Among other things, I wanted to show how many locals we had assisting us, because most films about climbing Kilimanjaro leave them out -- implying that the tourists make it up on their own, when in reality they will have a small army of porters carrying their tents, food, clothing, and other equipment, cooking all their meals, and bringing tea to their tents each morning. We left the Marangu Hotel, whihc is to the south of Kilimanjaro, and drove for hours on dirt roads to get to the Lemosho trailhead, which is to the North West. The original plan was to walk from there to the first night's camp at Big Tree. The drive took so long because of breakdowns and poor track conditions, that we eventually abandoned the trucks a few miles from the trailhead and walked in, so that we could get to the trailhead before dark and pitch our tents. This meant that on Day 2 we had to walk twice the distance originally intended.
