@Kilox1000 yes I see what you mean, what struck me about heath was that it seemed incredible that underneath the grimy make-up and the scars was that good-looking blonde dude from oz.
I guess the difference between the two actors is that Nicholson makes a brilliant deviation between his characters in the film and is similar to the sleazy characters he frequently plays. Ledger on the other hand as a massive departure in-character from his actual self.

I agree, they were both awesome performances, but what always amazed me with Nicholson was that it was the same guy playing the gangster at the beginning of the film, and then The Joker.
Just look at how his performance changes, and you really get the feel of the characters mental decline, not to mention how much the makeup alters your perception.
Heath was great, and truly menacing, but for me Joker '89 captures the comic book tone perfectly.
