  • do those 3ware raid cards allow simple JBOD? meaning, no raid setup, just a way of connecting 8x IDE hard drives into a pc? because my motherboard only allows 4x IDE drives, 2 in primary and 2 in secondary.. and i really would like some more hard drive capacity to play around with.. cheers

  • @ThePCgamer1989 Yep, if you don't set up an array, it just runs in JBOD mode.

  • what os do you use on this system

  • @CodCraftTech NASLite-2.

  • One thing that got me wondering about this system.. why the Pentium 4 based Xeons (I would almost bet they're Socket 604) as a base system..?!

Seems "a bit" of a waste in terms of power consumption for a fileserver O_o

  • @Knaeckebrotsaege Because the motherboard came with the case. I was considering changing the board a couple years ago, but I never was able to find one that had two 64 bit 66Mhz PCI slots that were spaced far enough apart for all the ribbon cables to fit.

The other thing, is that the software may change in the future, or I may use the machine for something different. But For the time being I might just run a single CPU, and keep the second as a spare for future use.

  • Been waiting for this for a long time, I think servers are sooo cool. Keep it up :)

  • @BlueFoxTV I play HD off it all the time, that's what it's for LOL. This system can easily sustain 45MB/sec or more over the gigabit LAN.

  • Lol, i though my Q6600 based 4TB (2X 1.5WD Green drives + 1 WD Black) was getting old. then again, i use mine as a personal file server and a game server. But it has gone 5 years and never missed a beat!

  • You could add newer fans that are bigger to reduce noise.

  • I still use IDE at my house and it is great but my desktop is SATA III and it is fast so is ide

  • i have a bag full of 512mb sticks of server ram pulled from a working unit for free if you want it :)

also about 6 slimline cd roms.
