So I found these AMAZING strings in Soundfonts.it. They're under the name "Massive Strings," and for good reason; they're the best-soundings strings I've heard in a free soundfont so far. Very epic, includes like 4 cellos and 16 violins. They have a slow attack, though, which could be a good thing or a bad thing depending on what you need. I decided to take a MIDI from VGMusic of Final Fantasy VII's Prelude theme (I'd credit the uploader but his name doesn't appear) and swap most of the MIDI instruments with these strings. I didn't know an oboe, clarinet, or good harp, so I just decided to swap everything to the strings except for the harp part that is GarageBand's "Grand Piano on Stage" with a lot more reverb and echo. The brass later on is done by another very good soundfont I found on HammerSound called Overture. Then I also took the liberty to duplicate all the string tracks and change the soundfont for the Papelmedia Aah-Choir soundfont for some more epicness. Then I panned some stuff and played with the volumes and then I thought maybe I could add some guitars, so I did, although I know many will say it completely ruined it because of the quality of my guitar. It kinda did, that's why I added them later on instead of throughout. The quality of my POD X3 Live's USB recording if something I really have to work on. I'm not even sure if there's much I can do about it. I don't know if it's something I can do within my patch, on GarageBand, or by finding another way to record altogether. But I hope the quality of my guitar can someday fall well in the mix with these professional-sounding strings.

Hardware:

Line 6 POD X3 Live
Ibanex Xiphos XPT700
Randall RG25RXM 33w as monitor

  • ALso, Have you ever tried Airfont 380? that has some pretty awesome strings...

  • @guitarskills2 Never heard of it, looking it up, thought it was a specific string soundfont, apparently it's a lot of things. I'd try it myself but GarageBand can't access different soundbanks from a soundfont, so I have to stick to the ones that only have one sound...

  • its amazing... but a mac? why!?! (PS: I have Apple hate)

  • @guitarskills2 Because I'll use any music tools that are right in front of me, objectively? First of all, I got my Mac laptop on a good deal, and second, FYI, Core Audio > ASIO, and Mac has better converters, so if I were to record something for real I'd use Mac. I have both Leopard and WinXP with Boot Camp, by the way, so I can play games. Honestly, the Mac-hating thing is just a fucking fad, I bet you can't think of a clear reason why you don't like Macs. Anyway, thanks.
