"Skijoring" is originally a Norwegian sport that involves being towed around on skis by dogs or horses. The little mountain mining town of Leadville, Colorado, has taken the sport as their own, and turned the knobs to eleven.
They start by putting a foot of snow BACK on the city's main street, and grooming it with sno-cats. Then, the cowboys, cowgirls, and skiiers show up. A skiier is pulled down Harrison Avenue as fast as the horse can go. The skiier hits a number of jumps, gates, and tries to collect rings by jousting them off poles.
This video gives you a very short idea of how FAST the sport is. The skiier in this video has just come off a jump and is turning hard to get into position to joust some rings. The same intersection is also the starting line for the world famous Leadville Trail 100 Marathon and the Leadville Burro Race.
