The viola bastarda is more of a specific style of playing the viola da gamba.
It was popular in Italy during the 17th century. It is an improvisatory style of playing through an existing madrigal.
The gamba takes a bit of every part of the madrigal and in between a lot of scales and jumping intervals.

This style of music creates a very spheric sound.
