Naomi Sato shows off the multifunctioning community center designed by Sasaki Sekkei and completed in January 2013. The center is a critical resource for the town of Kitakami, which lost most of its services (and housing) to the 2011 Great East Japan earthquake and tsunami.
The center includes a fresh produce market, multipurpose room and Kodomo House, or childrens house, where kids can study and play away from their cramped temporary housing units.
Sato-san hopes the We Are One center becomes a hub for the community and, after only six weeks being open, it's well on its way.
