Here is an advanced video about blending. The subject is a Devastator Squad Plasman Cannon marine. I illustrated how to smoothly transition paint from the edges of the armor. Enjoy!

  • another tip jawaballs is to use baal red to blend the paints together then after highlighting. its a very good way to get some deep red colours and it slightly reddens up the orange,

  • @randombloke10 Thats a good one, this vid was made before Baal Red existed. It does help to smooth out blending.

  • Sorry Jawa, but I really don't like with the way you've used orange to highlight your model.

Red does not turn Orange in the light, it will turn white.

Just look at a red car.

Unlike blues, where you can add white to highlight it, reds would turn pink.

Instead, you need to consider colour theory.

    All colours fade to grey.

If you use a neutral grey (white+black), it will change the 'light intensity', not the colour.

Add this to red and you will get a nice desaturated finish that looks real.

  • @Cliffjumper24 I was just answering another reply here and saw that you never did get back to me with video showing off your talent. Shame.

  • @jawaballs I must've missed yur reply.

I'm afraidI don't have a video camera, but you can see a little of my work here....

The work on there is a bit dated.... I'm a little better now.

I could do with updating a few things.

Re-reading my original 'colour theory' comment, it reads pretty abupt.

Sorry if that's how I came across... having comments restricted to a limited number of characters does that.

To the point, but loses the niceties.

  • @Cliffjumper24 Your page link seems to be broke. How bout you do a feature post on my blog? I'm always looking for good content. The only problem I had with your comment was that the vast majority of my videos are aimed at the guy who "cant paint to save his life" in an attempt to help those guys create something they can be proud of. So I render down what I say and do so that people can understand and more importantly, accomplish it. Know what I mean? Let me know if you want a feature. :)

  • @Cliffjumper24 You're probably right if I was Rembrandt painting a portrait. But I will point out that the use of orange is not my invention. It is a tried and true method for painting Blood Angels suggested by Games Workshop, 'Eavy Metal professionals, and Golden Daemon winners. But what you suggest sounds interesting. I would love to see you demonstrate it! Make a video showing what you mean and I will attach it to this one.

  • @haildaking, I have found the only way is to try them out. Play with someone who will let you proxy out different wargear and go from there. I have three different captains I'll use depending on what army I'm playing against. Hope this helps.

  • hey jawa, ive started a blood angels army, and im trying so hard to apply your wet blending technique, and i seem to mostly just end up with a hard line that fades into a smudge....what could be some things to keep an eye on to ensure that my blending is smooth? also the streak of the highlight i apply doesnt fade gradually into the darker colour, like yours seems to....it pretty much thins out from where i did the highlight and leaves a faint but evident smudge or smear....its hard to explain

  • If someone in the comments has a suggestion that can work too.

  • @Jawaballs

Hey. I play blood angels too. But my only hq is the captain from black reach. I want to buy a new one but I can't decide which one. I was thinking Dante with his deep strike no scatter perk. I just can't decide. I have a 10 man assault squad, death company w/ jump packs, Baal pretedor, and a 10 man tac, and terminators. What do you suggest?

  • hahahah you put him back in your squad, and he'll stand out ayee

  • Is this the technique you've been using up til now?

  • so you highlight with blazing orange then fiery orange
