Ottoman military bands are thought to be the oldest variety of military marching band in the world. Though they are often known by the Persian-derived word mahtar (مهتر; mehter in Ottoman Turkish) in the West, that word, properly speaking, refers only to a single musician in the band. In Ottoman, the band was generally known as mehterân (مهتران, from the Persian plural mahtarān), though those bands used in the retinue of a vizier or prince were generally known as mehterhane (مهترخانه, meaning roughly, "a gathering of mehters", from Persian "house of the mahtar"). In modern Turkish, the band as a whole is often termed mehter takımı ("mehter platoon"). In the West, the band's music is also often called Janissary music because the janissaries formed the core of the bands.

Prinz Dimitrie Cantemir (1673-1723) -- Elçi pesrevi (Makam: Irak, Usul: Düyek)

The Janissaries (from Ottoman Turkish يکيچرى Yeniçeri meaning "new soldier") comprised infantry units that formed the Ottoman sultan's household troops and bodyguards. The force was created by the Sultan Murad I from Christian male children levied through the devşirme system from conquered countries in the 14th century[1] and was abolished by Sultan Mahmud II in 1826 with the Auspicious Incident.

  • @kingpoostick Sorry, you can't have an empire and be responsible only for the good things that kappen. If some space/country was under the jurisdiction of an empire, the empire is responsible for what happens there, especially if it's something major, such as famine or genocide.

  • @duerandaggi Irish caused it themselves, and it was yankie farmers/ frontiersmen who attacked natives rarely were attack by the actual army.

  • @kingpoostick Yeah right, including the Irish Famine? Not to mention the indigenous peoples of North America, Australia, etc.

  • Our glorious predecessors and our illustrious ancestors - may Allah light up their tombs دَوْلَتِ عَلِيّهٔ عُثمَانِیّ

  • @XXGDUBSXX modernization of its empire is important more to the brits than to the natives....First of all it is hard to transfer objects from place to place like the invention of train, it makes traveling from place to place easier...and in times of war they need resources quickly and in the industrial revolution they need more things like steel, timber and others...they need those things quick and thats why they modernize their empire....I will never admire this pesky language

  • @kingpoostick I'm in support of "most" Empires but that mans reaction to your claim show the subjectivity around such topics.

If Turkey is an American "vassal" then how come they wouldn't even let us use their airspace in our invasion of Iraq?

And people rebelling doesn't make something bad, all it proves is that people are willing to kill each other over ideological disputes.

People can criticize Empires for their transgressions because no Empire is perfect, then again neither is any state.

  • @MrAliffAxis Because of nationalist, if the Ottomans are so good why did the Arabs revolt agaist them, and all countrys progressed much better when under the British Empires influence, Africa didnt even have a wheel until the British came, the US, Australia and india are all the sucessful nations they are today because of the British, but what do the Ottomans have, the middle ease hahah the Balklans and Turkey itself is a vassel of the US so just admire the language and technology your using now

  • @kingpoostick the British Empire was not good at all...Its the baddest of them all...they're cruel..they be the kings advisor but actually trying o rule the country by itself....even if you were granted independence somehow the brits still manage to fuck up others country..if the empire was good why are there revolution in india,malaya...Conclusion is British Empire is one of the baddest empire

  • @XXGDUBSXX The British Empire was the only Empire that was good for everyone in it.

  • @rza884 Give Asia minor back you stupid turk.
