- En route from Valdez, Alaska, traveling through the home of sea lions, sea otters, whales and myriad seabirds, the giant tanker Exxon Valdez ran aground on Bligh Reef in Prince William Sound, spilling over ten million gallons of oil. The accident occurred on March 24, 1989. An army of cleanup workers flooded the region, trying to rescue and wash oil-covered animals and steam-cleaning the rocky shores of oil. At its height, the cleanup involved more than 11,000 people, 1,400 vessels and 85 aircraft. A Cousteau study concluded that the cleanup impacted the environment as much as the oil spill itself.
