Creating the Kid Stays in the Picture effect on a simple shot.
1: Cut out the foreground in Photoshop on a duplicate of the image.
2. Use cloning to remove the figure (on the background layer) as much as possible in Photoshop.
3. In After Effects, separate the two layers in 3D and create a simple camera move

Most of the time is spent cloning -- the bulk of which was cut out of this video. With an aligned source and the clone stamp tool, choose along a line (e.g. the line between rough and green) then clone into the person, replacing him with grass (or whatever) from the background. You'll have to use a non-aligned source in the tight spots sometimes.

  • @wilsonmcphert It's often used in documentaries that use archival stills, but it can be used any time you want the effect.

  • thank you for your informative video. When would you use this? Perhaps in slideshow videos?
